<Kompositionen V>

The series „Kompositionen“ by Banz & Bowinkel presents the three-dimensional yet abstract world of computer-
generated environments. Expanding on their previous series „Primitives“, in which Banz & Bowinkel reinterpreted the formal vocabulary of common 3D programmes into an alphabet of digital readymades, they now combine these virtual archetypes into meticulously arranged compositions, dropped into infinite caretesian space. Cubes, pyramids, cylinders, cones and tori are the building blocks of these virtual worlds.
In *Simulacra and Simulation* Jean Baudrillard describes how the boundary between reality and its representation
is increasingly blurred and he distinguishes between different phases of simulation: from „reflection
of reality,“ to „distortion“ and „concealment“ until the final stage of a perfect „simulacrum“, in which what
was initially meant to represent reality now replaces it entirely. The symbols and signs are increasingly replacing
or recreating reality.
Applied to the series „Compositions“, those virtual spaces no longer depict reality but they have become a
reality in their own. And as those they are not bound to the rules of our physical existence any more but merely
obey the rules of code. These shapes are not abstractions of our reality but the forecast of new worlds
and truths in a whole new meaning.
